A Goodbye...

So I know it was my aim to watch 365 films in 365 days but that's not going to happen as I basically have no time to do this since coming to university as I'm busy with that. So this will be my last post and I hope that those reading this blog have enjoyed it. I am thinking of starting another blog as a long term blog but that will be much more casual then this one and probably won't just be about films but other things as well like food. So thank you! x

Film #273: FRIENDS WITH BENEFITS (2011)

This is a really good watch in a bad way. The narrative is predictable but it's really funny which is strange for an American comedy film. I think that Justin Timberlake is a much better actor than he is music artist and I really think that he should make it his full time gig. I also think that Mila Kunis is a really underrated actress I think she really has improved since she first started as a young teen actress. This is a really good young adult film to watch with friends.

Film #272: ALICE (1988)

Before Tim Burton's Alice in Wonderland there was this live action film based from the brilliant novel by Lewis Carroll. This was a really amazing film. However I prefer Burton's version. Don't ask me why I just do. But I did still really enjoy this film as well. I just really love the Alice in Wonderland in general!

Film #270: THE BEST YEARS OF OUR LIVES (1946)

This film was damn near perfect. Seriously I loved it and I thought it was absolutely beautiful. It was also very symbolic of the time of men coming out of war and going back to a new reality with new challenges. This was a triumphant of a film that grabbed the audiences attention and emotions right from the beginning. It truly is a phenomenal film.

Film #269: THE ADVENTURES OF ROBIN HOOD (1938)

I love a good Robin Hood film and this definitely was a brilliant Robin Hood film. At points it was a little cheesy but it wasn't overboard. I thought that the film was composed very well. Also the costumes were really good considering the time in which this film was made. As well as the colour being a lot more under control than in the previous review. With films and eras like this I always wonder how amazing it must have been to see the turn of the colour film and to see how quickly to industry moved as a result of the new technology as it was definitely at a quicker pace than it is these days.

Film #268: BECKY SHARP (1935)

This was the first/one of the first films to be filmed using tricolour technology to give standard colour that we know today. Well sort of standard colour as it was bright in contrast. But it was a pretty good film overall and was quite enjoyable although it hurt my eyes to watch it for too long.

Film #267: BULLDOG DRUMMOND (1929)

I thought this was a good film, I liked how the camera was used in shot for effect using deep focus. And as well thought that it was very well edited for it's time to keep the audience involved. There are a couple of moments with some very dodgy sound as a result of recording sounds and adding them over the top. But overall the whole film is a good watch and I did enjoy it.

Film #266: NANCY DREW (2007)

This is a very conventional American teen film about a young detective. It's a nice film but it's nothing to rave about. It was a sweet film. But I'm sure the books and the original films are a lot better than this remake. However I have not seen those films so I can't comment on that. As I said though I thought this was a lovely children's film.

Film #265: JURASSIC PARK III (2001)

Why?! Just why? They should have stopped with the first one. I hate it when classic films have second or third films when the first were so glorious and special. This was a huge disappointment from the first and should never be watched by any member of the public.

Film #264: THE REAR WINDOW (1954)

Another brilliant Hitchcock classic! I seriously am growing more and more in love with Hitchcock with every film that I watch! I loved the use of voyeurism in this film and how it really plays with human curiosity and emotions. As well as it being brilliantly shot, that's the brilliant thing about Hitchcock is that all of his works were pieces of experiments to how he could shoot film and what the best ways to use the camera are. This is a must see film.

Film #263: MY WEEK WITH MARILYN (2011)

I really like historical drama like this, they have a brilliant sense of realism to them (obviously) but the events, people, places are easier to relate to when they're about someone real and not fictitious. And this film was no different, I loved it. I know that there's a lot of things that could be incorrect as with most/all historical dramas. But I thought Michelle Williams was a brilliant Marilyn and the costume and make up department did super well in this film to transform her into Marilyn. This is a really good watch.

Film #262: NATURAL BORN KILLERS (1994)

Well, this film is what it's title states. It's about natural born killers. Literally from the opening second there is murder and fighting and a lot of violence that firstly doesn't make sense as to the motive behind it. And in a weird way the film makes killing seem exciting, which isn't a good thing as it's murdering and that's against the law. I kind of liked this film but I think I enjoyed the camera work and editing more than the narrative.

Film #261: AUGUST: OSAGE COUNTY (2013)

This was a real Hollywood, star-studded cast which made the performance of the film overall amazing to watch. I loved the narrative and the idea of the dynamic between each member of the family and how it was different with each character. But throughout the film there was moments when I felt sympathy towards every character and moments when I hated every character. This film is really unpredictable, which I loved, and the plot twists were to die for.

Film #260: THE ARTIST (2011)

This was a really good film and an amazing watch. It was so nice to see the classic film style being shown appreciation through this film. I really loved the narrative and I'm glad it won the awards that it did as it can help encourage other directors to explore new ways of filming and editing based from the influence of how film originally started. These days anyone can make a film so they've lost sight of the skill it was to make a brilliant and classic film. Very few directors/writers these days actually have it in them to make something brilliant and beautiful.

Film #259: ICE AGE: CONTINENTAL DRIFT (2012)

Ice age just needs to stop now. The first film was completely brilliant but after that they all just continued downhill. It's so boring to watch the same story line be repeated in numerous ways. I'm serious, they should have stopped after the first one and made it a classic film one it's own not a film franchise that is now dragged out and hated. They need to come up with new ideas and leave Ice Age alone.

Film #258: TINKER TAYLOR SOLIDER SPY (2011)

I thought this film was really good and the cast was amazing but at the same time it should have been more because the cast is so good and because it's a fantastic narrative. So in that sense I was a little disappointed. Also there was such a big buzz around this film that it became a disappointment because it didn't live up to that. It's good but it wasn't brilliant.

Film #257: GREEN LANTERN (2011)

This film was horrible. I hated it. It was so boring, which I know is a lot to say for a superhero film but it was and I think that the casting was wrong. Ryan Reynolds should not have played the Green Lantern. He is not suited for action films, I think he is better at comedy and romance films. This was a big let down of a film. DC have announced that they're doing  sequel and I hope they change their minds as it should not be done.

Film #256: JACK RYAN; SHADOW RECRUIT (2014)

I thought this film was alright. It was good but I prefer Chris Pine in other films such as Star Trek. But overall this was a good film that was entertaining to watch. I just felt it lacked the character depth that Pine has with Kirk in Star Trek and the relationship that he then carries with that role to the other actors which is evidenced in the films. But it was a good watch as a whole.

Film #255: GROUNDHOG DAY (1993)

I had never seen this film all the way through so I decided to do it now. This film was amazingly good. I think the idea of repeating the same day is, firstly, very scary, but also a brilliant narrative choice for any film. This film is brilliant but I don't think it would have worked without Bill Murray who is a brilliant comedy actor. This film is a great watch and should be enjoyed from a young age.

Film #254: LICENCE TO WED (2007)

This is a really cheesy romcom film about a couple having to under go a test (basically) before they get married to see if they are compatible enough to be able to cope with being married. The beauty of this film actually comes from Robin Williams who creates the humour and gives the film pace otherwise this is just another conventional American film about marriage.

Film #253:THE GRADUATE (1967)

I don't know if I liked this film or not. It was another really symbolic film and it had a very good narrative but throughout the film it made me feel uncomfortable. I'm sure that might have been the intention. But it was a good watch and was amazing to see Dustin Hoffman that young. It was a good film overall however I'm not sure if I'm going to watch it again.

Film #252: THE KARATE KID (1984)

This is a classic family film. It's a really lovely story of a boy learning karate to compete and shows him overcoming obstacles to achieve his dream. It's a sweet movie and you can't help but route for Daniel to win. It's a lovely film. I haven't seen the remake but I'm sure it was a mistake.

Film #251: MONTY PYTHON'S LIFE OF BRAIN (1979)

As far as comedy goes it doesn't get better than this. The Monty Python films are just amazing and so funny. This one is no different. I think I still prefer the Holy Grail but I still was in stitches of laughter watching this film and enjoyed it very much. I think it's time they start playing these films more on TV than they currently do or we'll end up having a generation of people who don't know these films and what the Python's have for comedy history.

Film #250: WILD STRAWBERRIES (1957)

This is a very symbolic film that a lot of people spend hours and hours on end trying to decode to try and find the true meaning behind it. I thought that it was basically about death but obviously there could be others that would tell me otherwise. I did really enjoy the film though. It's Swedish and there were subtitles but it's still worth a watch.

Film #249: MEAN GIRLS 2 (2011)

Never do a sequel that's basically a remake of a brilliant film. I hated this. Mean Girls is such an amazing and beautiful film but this was horrible. No one should ever watch this film!

Film #248: A FANTASTIC FEAR OF EVERYTHING (2012)

This wasn't a good film, it was predictable and a little it stupid. I thought some of the humour was really good but there were moments that just baffled and annoyed me. I watched it as I'm a fan of Simon Pegg's but I was disappointed with this.

Film #247: STAR TREK II: THE WRATH OF KHAN (1982)

I really liked this film. I thought that it was a really good story line that was brilliant at constantly being developed. It was a brilliant enhancement from the series and was the film that Star Trek Into Darkness was based on. The film was really good as films from TV series are often not as good such as Doctor Who the movie was great but it limited the story to what you can do as the series gives more hours of screen time in which to develop a plot. But I did enjoy this film.

Film #246: THE BIRDS (1963)

This film freaked me out. I am now in fear of birds. It's a brilliant film but really realistic despite all the birds being animated and fake. But it is an amazing film. It's very clear to see why Hitchcock is one of the greatest directors of all time, if not the greatest. His work is phenomenal.

Film #245: MARY JANE'S MISHAP (1903)

This film was extremely funny, it looked at the importance of the close up on detail and helped show importance to that, particularly with comedy. It's actually a really good short film and I really enjoyed it. It's a very good watch.

Film #244: QUEEN KELLY (1927)

What a film! This was so strange for the time it came out with some quite risky plot choices. It starts off as a traditional romance film but ends as a really strange and quite controversial ending. This film thrives for the close up though and really starts to show a development in the film narrative. It is a good watch, a little long but good.

Film #243: THE CURIOUS CASE OF BENJAMIN BUTTON (2008)

I thought this film was alright but it was pretty amazing how they managed to long out this film when the book is only like 10 pages long. I did think it was good but it was missing something for me that would have made it wonderful but I don't know what that thing is. I enjoyed it but it was only alright not amazing.

Film #242: REVOLUTIONARY ROAD (2008)

This was a really amazing film. I completely adored it. Kate Winslet and Leonardo DiCaprio are a brilliant pairing and this film was truly evidence of that. I loved that in every scene they're smoking but also the performances of some very intense plot developments was remarkable.

Film #241: THE INCREDIBLE HULK (2008)

I didn't like this film. I'm not a fan of Hulk in general and this one wasn't any better. I don't get why people like him so much he literally just goes around smashing things. It wasn't a good film and I think at the moment no one is a better Hulk than Mark Ruffalo, so I wasn't impressed overall and I don't intend on watching the film again.

Film #240: SUNSET BOULEVARD (1950)

This was a brilliant drama, film noir that completely captivated the audience immediately. I loved it. It's a film based on a flashback so that the audience can see how a character ends up dead and in the swimming pool which is the first shot of the film. The film then follows what happens six months before the death and how it happened. A truly brilliant film.

Film #239: THE KIDS ARE ALRIGHT (2010)

This is such a lovely film and I really enjoyed it. It's a lovely heart warming comedy-drama film. It's a really good watch and there's not a lot more I can say about it really other than people should watch it.

Film #238: ELLA ENCHANTED (2004)

An odd film in the Anne Hathaway film collection. Which is incredibly cheesy and very conventional of a fairy tale story but I really liked it. It's based around a girl called Ella (Anne Hathaway) who has been cursed with the power of obedience which means that she has to do what people tell her to do. This obviously causes some problems when bad people find out about her powers. It's a good family watch though which I really enjoyed.

Film #237: A TRIP TO THE MOON (1902)

This film is really strange but so revolutionary for the time as it redefined set and costume design. Making this film one of the most important films in cinema history for this reason. I thought it was strange to watch and there were moments of it being slow paced but it was still good for the time of when it got released.

Film #236: ROPE (1948)

This was a brilliant film by Hitchcock. And it was beautifully shot. It's based on a play so Hitchcock wanted to have a theatre feel to the film therefore it feels as it the film is shot in one continuous shot with no editing, there is some which has been cleverly hidden but it's done so well you don't notice. The story is about the psychological morals of two guys who kill someone in the first minute of the film and seeing if they're going to get caught. I absolutely loved it.

Film #235: MEN IN BLACK (1997)

I had never seen this film all the way through, only bits of it when I caught it on TV. But having now watched it all the way through. I completely loved it. It was so brilliantly funny and serious as it was heart warming and action packed. Also the theme song is wicked, it's up there as one of the best alongside The Ghostbusters theme. It's such a good watch. I haven't seen the rest of the Men in Black series but don't know if I want to as follow up film as never as good.

Film #234: THE INFIDEL (2010)

I hated this film. It was so stupid. I thought it was going to be brilliant as there are loads of amazing comedian figures in such as Omid Djalili, Matt Lucas and Miranda Hart. But it was seriously terrible. And most of the times it was bordering on being completely offensive to most people but at the other times it was only slightly offensive. Don't watch this film!

Film #233: DEMOLITION MAN (1993)

This was a strange film that made me laugh at the narrative at moments when I don't think I'm meant to. But come on who could not laugh at the "sex" scene that happens through the computer. That was genius. Again it's another one of those films that makes the audience question what we could be capable of it the future and what life might mean with all the technologies and inventions that will appear or could appear in the future. I liked it but it wasn't amazing. It's the sort of film that you could happily have on in the background.

Film #232: INCEPTION (2010)

I loved this film! It was amazing but I hated the ending. I have to know if it was reality or not. However up until the point of the ending, it's amazingly good. And I really loved it. I do like that it makes the audience question what is reality and what is a dream. As well I thought the editing and sound for the film was brilliant as were the different moving sets. It's a really good watch that people should

Film #231: REEL BAD ARABS (2006)

This was a TV documentary film about how Hollywood portrays Arabian people. It was a really interesting watch and was quite amazing to see how many films portray the Arabian people in such a bad light and how that has spread from the film industry to other areas of the industry as a whole, such as through the news and comedians. I thought it was a good watch.

Film #230: ALL ABOUT STEVE (2009)

What a disaster of a film! Seriously no one should ever be allowed to watch this film. It's absolutely terrible and I have no idea why it ever got made into a film. Sandra Bullock and Bradley Cooper should be ashamed of themselves for making this film!

Film #229: THE X FILES: I WANT TO BELIEVE (2008)

My mother is a huge X files fan and was nagging me to watch all of them and I finally finished when I watched this final film. And honestly it was a disappointment from the TV series which are amazing and so brilliant for their ideas of each episode. But the film was just cheesy and boring and not needed for the franchise. They should have left it, the series was complete and ended really nicely before. I was disappointed.

Film #228: TWISTER (1996)

I thought this film was a good film but nothing amazing. I liked how simple the plot is. It's about some scientists trying to know more about twisters, basically. And that made the ending of the film so wonderful and filled with such happiness as the goal that they achieved wasn't a major international saving for example. It was a really beautiful film.

Film #227: SALT (2010)

I thought this was a pretty good film and obviously Angelina Jolie was brilliant because she is in every film she does. I really liked this spy thriller, I thought the plot was solid and I love any good fight scenes and deep plot that films like this have to offer. It is a really good watch!

Film #226: THE ANT BULLY (2006)

I love children's films and  I really loved this film. It's about a boy being shrunk to the size of an ant. It's a lovely tale and it shows the transformation of a person (no pun intended) and how something magical is all that it takes to change someone into the better person and the person they were meant to be. Although these days a lot of films have the ideology of having a person shrunken down for some adventure such as Epic and Honey I shrunk the kids.

Film #225: THE FLY (1986)

This was a really odd concept of a man making a teleport machine but on one time using this machine a fly gets in the machine and so the man starts to turn into a fly human thing. It was actually disgusting to look at, I know that's prejudiced towards flies but it really was super horrible to look at his transformation. It was an ok film though.

Tuesday 14 October 2014

Film #224: PLANET OF THE APES (2001)

Is it strange to say that I didn't like this film but I love the prequels that are coming out at the moment? It's just this film is so long and for ages I was waiting for something amazing to happen but it never did. The best things to come out these films is the people that go dressed up as the apes to Comic con, seriously they look fabulous!

Film #223: EINSTEIN AND EDDINGTON (2008)

This is a really good TV documentary and features the wonderful David Tennant. And the wickedly talented Andy.  It's a really well produced film about the life of Albert Einstein and Arthur Eddington. There's not a lot else to say about it other than it's really great!

Film #222: ENDER'S GAME (2013)

I really liked this film, as I love a good sci-fi film and this one was brilliant. I loved the plot twist, a good plot twist is something I love more than a good sci-fi film! It was really good. It's about a group of children being trained to fight a war. But the plot revolves around Ender who is much more talented (best way to put it) compared to the others in training. And this does not go unnoticed.

Film #221: SCHINDLER'S LIST (1993)

This is an absolutely amazing and mind blowingly brilliant film. It was the most emotionally draining three hours of my life! I don't think I've cried that much in a very long time. I loved the use of the black and white (except for the girls coat). It's horrible to see such graphic truths but that's what makes the film so powerful! A must see in someones life!

Monday 13 October 2014

Film #220:NINE (2009)

Despite this being a musical and me loving musicals, I didn't like this one. For me the plot was all over the place and even though there was big stars in it and some really good and well written songs, it just didn't work. I love the song Unusual Way, but other than that the rest of the film is really wishy-washy. Not a good result overall. If you're looking for a good musical I would recommend Les Miserables, Chicago or The Rocky Horror Picture Show.

Film #219: HOUSING PROBLEMS (1935)

This is a documentary film from 1935 and is about the housing problems that working class people lived in. It's amazing to see what people actually put up with in their living conditions and makes me very thankful for the standards of living conditions nowadays. It is a truly funny, weird and shocking documentary film.

Film #218: HOSPITAL (1970)

This was a documentary film about a hospital, however this is an observation documentary. Meaning that there is no narration or major editing to the film. Everything that is shown is real. Which is amazing to watch. Obviously as it was made in 1970 all the hospital technology and procedures are completely different to what they are now, which it have a completely different purpose to what it did when it first came out. When it was released it was to inform the audience of the hardship of hospitals etc, but now it can be used as a comparison to our hospitals nowadays.

Film #217: 9 (2009)

This is a strange Tim Burton film and sticks out as an odd animation film (compared to his other animations). I can't really go into to much detail without giving the whole plot away. But it's set as a post-apocalyptic sci-fi film about these dolls that scientists have made. They don't have names but numbers and the story is based around the life of number 9 (hence the title). I really loved this film, it was completely original and lovely.

Film #216: HUGO (2011)

This was another really good film. I loved the concept of it and it was beautifully filmed. Especially considering there were always lots of layers of set/people/sounds/objects because of some of the main sets being train stations. I think that Asa Butterfield is a fantastic actor and I think the world should see more of his skills! Seriously if you don't believe me watch The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas, it is absolutely mind-blowingly fantastic!!

Film #215: AUSTRALIA (2008)

This is a really well shot film. I loved the beauty of the country that the director and camera people managed to highlight. Also I loved the atmospheric soundtracks that they had put in the background of the scenes. All of these soundtracks were actual ones that they recorded from the locations and added in during post production but I think it works extremely well. Also brilliant performances by Hugh Jackman and Nichole Kidman.

Sunday 12 October 2014

Film #214: SWORDFISH (2001)

I thought this was a pretty good film. I liked the concept and the directing of the film. In particular I love the opening scene with John Travolta I thought it was really inspirational to have a film commenting on the realism of film and how films should pan out if they were in fact real. I thought the editing for that opening sequence as well was brilliant at setting the tone for the rest of the film by having it make the audience feel completely uncomfortable by using the camera itself.

Film #213: MY SUPER EX GIRLFRIEND (2006)

I really loved this film, it was so wonderful and bad. It was so bad that it was good. And it really is such a funny film. I don't really have anything else to say about it other than it being brilliant!

Film #212: KICK-ASS 2 (2013)

I know I shouldn't have watched this film if I didn't like the first one but I really didn't like this film. They should never do sequels to films they always end up being a lot worse than the originals and this film shows that massively.

Film #211: KICK ASS (2010)

I didn't really like this film I thought it was annoying and in no way exciting and there was no plot to it that was worth while. I did like the final battle scene but other than that I was really disappointed with it as I thought it was going to be brilliant.

Saturday 11 October 2014

Film #210: CATFISH (2010)

I love the TV series of Catfish and decided to watch the film and it was so moving. I loved how it was amateurly filmed, I know why that was, but these days (especially since this film/TV series) production companies would give lots of money for these films to be made as documentary films and for them to be done professionally. But people have to watch this film and go on the emotional roller coaster ride to know why catfishing is wrong!

Film #209: AMERICAN HUSTLE (2013)

I didn't really like this film. I felt that there was way too much dialogue with lots of still shots and little pace to it. It got boring and I lost interest. Jennifer Lawrence gave a great performance and I thought she was amazing in the scene where she fights with the main guy (who's name I can't remember). I also loved the soundtrack music for this film but other than that I thought it was a let down considering the amount of Oscar/BAFTA nominations it got and the amount of marketing that surrounded the film.

Film #208: THE WOLF OF WALL STREET (2013)

I really liked this film. It was long and parts were completely unnecessary but it was good. It definitely needed to be an 18 certificate, for the most of it it was about sex and drugs but it was a thrilling film that kept you excited to watch what the characters were going to do next. I thought it was very well written and produced and I love the breaking of the forth wall between the narration and the audience.

Film #207: BAD NEIGHBORS (2014)

This was a comedy film featuring Zac Efron and it was a rather amusing film. But it's not anything to get overly excited about. It's a good film for a Friday night but it doesn't have anything about it which screams CLASSIC! Although this film is better than what other have been like in the comedy genre. But I do wish they would stop making really stupid comedies for the hell of making money and focus on doing it for the art of

Film #206: KING KONG (1933)

I love the 2003 King Kong film so decided to watch the original which is just beautiful for the time that it was made in. The stop motion animation is amazing and although now is not realistic what so ever I still got teary at the end of the film. If you like the 2003 film or even the one that got made in between then watch the original to really appreciate how magnificent the narrative is and how amazing Kong is as a character himself.

Film #205: SINGING IN THE RAIN (1952)

I love a musical and this one was truly great. I loved all the dance routines and especially loved the classic song of "Singing in the Rain". As a fun fact, did you know that when they first shot "Singing in the Rain" the song, the  rain wasn't visible on the camera so they added milk to the water to make it non-transparent. However this meant that as the water got kicked about it started to foam which is  on the film to this day! There's not a lot I can say about this film other than it was very well done and definitely is a classic film!

Film #204:HULK (2003)

I didn't really like this film. Firstly I'm not a big fan of the Hulk but secondly it wasn't very well constructed. The narrative wasn't gripping enough and I just don't really like the Hulk in general so I didn't enjoy this film. I also think that the Hulk's head is too small for his body, just saying!

Film #203: SUPERMAN RETURNS (2006)

This was the sequel to the Superman film from 1978 and the other films that then branched off from that. It was a good film and was really enjoyable. I like superman in general as I like that he's not scary to look at like batman is who looks as if he should be the bad guy in his long black clothing, mask that covers all his face and deep voice. Superman is lighter and easier to get on with and to associate yourself with. This film presented all of that I really enjoyed it.

Film #202: THE APARTMENT (1960)

This is a great film. It's very dark for a romcom film but it works and it a perfect script and a perfect film. I loved the opening sequence as it was a great introduction to a character and set the scene so clearly. I really loved this film and Billy Wilder is a brilliant writer and director. Enough said!

Film #201: PSYCHO (1998)

This was the remake of the beautiful Hitchcock film and I was so disappointed. Firstly I was disappointed that they made a remake and secondly even though it was filmed shot for shot it had lost some of the power and the pace was lost and it became redundant. It really shouldn't have been remade and I literally don't have any idea why they wanted to remake a classic.

Film #200: PSYCHO (1960)

What an amazing film! This really was Hitchcock's masterpiece. I loved the composition of the film and how it made you feel uncomfortable watching throughout and constantly on the edge waiting for something to happen. The shower scene was phenomenal and so powerful! And the music score for the film was even more so. I truly loved this film and it stands as being one of the greatest films the industry has ever seen.

Film #199: THE 40-YEAR-OLD VIRGIN (2005)

I'll admit this was a funny film and I really enjoyed watching it. The concept was at points dry but I love awkward humour and Steve Carell was amazing. Also I loved the lad moments between Carell and his friends at his workplace. They were all terribly funny. It was very American in it's humour but it's a good film that works unlike some of the newer comedy films that are coming out. It's a good watch.

Film #198: JAWS: THE REVENGE (1987)

They should have stopped at the first one. They've gotten more and more ridiculous with each film. The brilliant thing about the first Jaws is that no one had ever seen anything like it and it was so amazingly shot and the more films they made the more ridiculous they've gotten. I also think that we as an audience are now not scared of the concept anymore because of the first films. When Jaws came out it was amazing because the plot was unknown and it was so powerful that  the tourism industry had a massive decrease in people wanting to go in the oceans.  So yeah I didn't really like this one. I've now seen all the Jaws films and the first one is by far the best one.

Film #197: WIMBLEDON (2004)

This was a cheesy and very predictable film and I didn't really enjoy it. It just wasn't believable and didn't have anything special about it to compete with other romcoms in the same genre. I don't know if it was just me but I didn't like this film and I didn't like the ending.

Film #196: SILVER LININGS PLAYBOOK (2012)

I really liked this film. It was really great seeing the normalisation of people who suffer from types of mental illnesses and seeing how the families cope and how they cope themselves. I loved Jennifer Lawrence and Bradley Cooper's performances in the film. And I love how they show the release from life being to dance and just enjoy yourself. As well as that it was a beautiful story about love. And I loved Lawrence when she got angry and spoke in sure an honest way to people, it was uplifting to see this.

Film #195: SHAKESPEARE IN LOVE (1998)

This film is so annoying. I hated firstly how Gwyneth Paltrow played Viola as she is very clearly an American actress putting on a really fake and stupid British accent. I don't understand why they gave her the role when there are so many amazing British actresses that could have played the part just as well, I can't think of any at the moment who would have been acting in the late 1990's but my point still stands. Which is why I think it's terrible that Paltrow then got an Oscar for her performance. She's not English!!
The film overall is sappy and shit. I hate all these films about older big characters in history like Shakespeare as no one knows for sure the life he lead as it was so long ago and yet they make films about a story which could have happened and manipulate the audiences to believing it.

Film #194: BACK TO THE FUTURE 2 (1989)

So this was not as good as the first film but it was still a fun watch. Although sequels never are as good as the first films. And with films like Back to the future I don't understand why they would ever try to beat the first one or compete with it in any way. Overall it's still a good film but I think they should have stopped at the first one.

Film #193: CITIZEN KANE (1941)

So as far as classic films go this is the best. I loved the whole concept of the film and the narrative behind it. It was completely wonderful and when watching you get so involved in the mystery behind who Kane actually is. I definitely did and almost was late to one of my lectures, I had to run in and hadn't had any breakfast! It was worth it though just to see the end of the film and to know what Rosebud meant. This is a film that will stay in film movie as one of the greats for a very long time.

Film #192: ABRAHAM LINCOLN VAMPIRE HUNTER (2012)

I loved this film it was so strange and had a narrative that I thought I would find offensive or over the top. But it wasn't it it was perfect. The narrative was so unbelievable that it then become believable as the narrative fit the timeline of Abraham Lincoln's. I was really impressed and the make up and the graphics throughout the film. Benjamin Walker and Dominic Cooper gave amazing performances!

Film #191: RENT (2005)

This was a good watch. It was a very good adaptation of the Broadway musical and was very well acted and produced. It is a really good watch for a late evening. Not a lot of brain power has to go into it, they are the best kind of films. I liked it. There's not really much else to say.

Film #190: THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN (2012)

I hated this film. The brilliance of Tobey Maguire has been belittled and they have completely ruined the face of spider-man. They've mocked Peter Parker by giving him this perfect Hollywood face that is Andrew Garfield which is totally conventionally unbelievable and you can't relate to him as Peter Parker. Andrew Garfield is not socially awkward he is confident and that radiates from him. Tobey Maguire suited the part so well due to his ordinary person awkwardness that Peter Parker had when he wasn't spider-man.

Film #189: EASY A (2010)

This film I think really set off Emma Stones career. Which is a sad thing as she isn't that great an actress. I think she's great in The Help but she isn't who the narrative is about, its about the stories of the black women working and trying to get the same rights. But Easy A is a fun film. It's so not realistic of school life, well life in general but is full of great morals.

Film #188: WHAT A GIRL WANTS (2003)

This was cheese, cheese, cheese. But it was made in the time where cheesy American chick-flicks were really popular. Look at Mean Girls (one of the greatest films ever) as an example of another cheesy film. This was a fun watch and is one of those great films to watch with friends at a sleepover if you're 13 or after a night out if you're 18. But not a classic.

Film #187: THE BLAIR WITCH PROJECT (1999)

Again another film that has freaked me out. It was extremely well shot to have that virtual element of the students filming the film as a amateur documentary styled film. I think this was a moment that changed film history through how this film was shot. Similar styles can be seen in very early films however it has not been done to this standard before and it worked extremely well. I did like this film but the realistic filming made it more creepy.

Film #186: THE OTHERS (2001)

This is a creepy film. I don't normally like films like this but I really enjoyed this film. It was slightly terrifying but was brilliant. I did not expect that plot twist! It's an amazing plot twist, I love a good plot twist. And Nicole Kidman was amazing (as always), she is a very talented woman. It is a good watch if you like slightly scary films and big plot twists.

Film #185: TERMINATOR 2: JUDGEMENT DAY (1991)

This was a really good film and was very good at keeping up to the standard of the first film. I really loved the car chase scene, I know that probably doesn't help but I liked that scene. I also loved how it edited throughout the film so that every detail was well presented and so that the action scenes became more and more thrilling and exciting to watch. It also made the sound more amplified and enhanced which turned the experience up massively.

Film #184: ALIEN (1979)

This film is amazing! You can really tell why it's so iconic and why there was/is such a buzz around it. Sigourney Weaver is absolutely, beautifully and amazingly brilliant in this film! It really isn't for the faint of heart and is a very powerful film. I thoroughly enjoyed this film. This is a must watch and everyone should see at one point in their life.

Film #183: HAIRSPRAY (1988)

I really didn't like the original Hairspray film the 2007 film is so much better. There's better acting, better pace for the film and is more interesting to watch. I got really bored with the original, it wasn't how I expected it to be. Obviously the latest film is more targeted to a different audience with different cultural conventions for film. In my opinion watch the first film.

Film #182: DIARY FOR TIMOTHY (1945)

This is actually a pretty good documentary film. It's about society and culture during the time of the second world war. However it has been shot as a letter being read out (narrated) to a baby called Timothy and the narrator reading out the letter is explaining what life is like to the baby. Its a good watch and is actually worth seeing.

Film #181: HOOKWINKED TOO! HOOD VS EVIL (2011)

So I'm not going to lie but I love Hoodwinked the first film. It has terrible animation and is really low budget looking but the humour and the narrative are wonderful. It's amazing the twist they play on the traditional Little Red Riding Hood. However, like most sequels, this one is really lacking in everything. They should have stopped after the first one. Heck, the first one didn't even get good reviews. That should have been the clue not to do a second film.

Film #180: LITTLE SHOP OF HORRORS (1986)

This is another mockery comedy musical and is so wonderfully weird. I love the cheesiness of the songs and of the characters. The films about Seymour who owns a flower shop that's struggling to keep business, so he buys an exotic plant to bring in more customers. However this plant is not an ordinary one and comes to life. Much like the cow-plant from the Sims games! But I loved this film and the fun that was radiating from it throughout.

Film #179: SHOCK TREATMENT (1981)

This is the sequel to a favourite of mine of The Rocky Horror Picture Show (TRHPS). TRHPS was absolutely amazing and was a phenomenal film and stage show. This sequel was unusual but not as brilliant as the first. The film follows the lives of Brad and Janet after their wedding as newly weds. They travel home to Denton to find that it has been taken over by Farley Flavors. Brad and Janet are then put on a game show called Marriage Maze. What's lovely about this is seeing the old cast taking on different roles however this film was definitely not as good as the first.

Film #178: THE GREAT TRAIN ROBBERY (1903)

This is when film started to get interesting and exciting. This film, although it drags out and doesn't have much narrative, showed the possibilities of the camera. For example it showed how close ups can be used for affect and started to develop movement of the camera to show different locations. Also this film shows the control of the camera and how smooth pan shots can create affect. It was a bit old and boring but a true stepping stone for film history.

Film 177: A TRIP TO THE MOON (1902)

This is a film that has stood out in history and it is amazing to watch. I loved the idea and it was very well pulled off for the time. As I said in the previous post about everyone watching the original films, that's kind of what I did. This film was definitely a huge step for animation and set designing. Well done to George Melies.

Film #176: DREAM OF A RAREBIT FIEND (1906)

This was one of the first films ever made. It is a bit shit but as I understand it it was brilliant for the time. It was quite amusing and was amazing to see how far film has developed. I think everyone should watch these early films so we can all appreciate what we now have with our film industry.

Film #175: NANOOK OF THE NORTH (1922)

This film was made by Robert Joseph Flaherty who was considered to be the father of documentary. And this was the first documentary he created. It's about the life of Nanook who is an eskimo and shows how he lives and survives the conditions that he lives in. It's a very fasinating watch to see how Nanook takes care of his family over the winter and how they all live their lives. It is called a docudrama as at the time documentary and drama were not seperate genres.

Film #174: REAR WINDOW (1954)

Again, another really good opening sequence, which sounds like a weird thing to talk about but it was great. It immediately creates voyeurism through how the tracking shot also gives insight to what the dynamic of the film is as well as letting the audience in to the secret lives of the people in the neighbourhood. I liked it.

Film #173: NIGHT AND THE CITY (1950)

This film another tedious film for me that I lose interest with but the filming of this film was really good, especially for the time it was made, and it was really encouraging to see so much detail to a narrative filming. I did like the opening sequence as it was brilliant at capturing the audience immediately in a chase scene that also introduces the characters and the location of the film.

Film #172: THE BICYCLE THIEVES (1948)

This film is about a guy who gets a job but needs a bike for it however he does not have one at that moment so has to find out a way to make it all work as he needs the money. To be honest I lost interest in the film. I'm terrible but it was really tedious.

Film #171: THE BIG SHAVE (1967)

This was a short film directed by Martin Scorsese. It is the oddest and horrific thing I have ever seen in my life. And after analysis in one of my lectures is about the Vietnam war, somehow. It's a completely symbolic film. Its also completely gross so if you are screamish and hate any form of blood don't watch it.

Film #170:THE TRUMAN SHOW (1998)

Ok this film is amazing. I so want to analysis this to pieces and I probably will knowing me. I thought the concept was genius. It's about a reality TV show based around the life of Truman, however he doesn't know that what he is living is a lie. Jim Carrey put in a performance of a life time. And it really makes you think about life and how much gets controlled by forces beyond our control. It's definitely a film that makes you think.

Film #169: VAMPS (2012)

This was quite an odd story of two vampires trying to live and find love and not give themselves away and not eat any humans. I did find it funny as in a strange way it also was mocking vampire films with its humour. This I think is needed in society after the Twilight serious destroyed the vampire fantasy genre forever!! But this was a good watch for a Friday night with friends.

Film #168: DO THE RIGHT THING (1989)

I didn't like this film, it just felt a bit pointless to me. This was mainly because the climax of the film was a street fight that gets out of control. I understand what Spike Lee was trying to achieve but it just didn't hit me in the feels (street talk, I'm down with the kids). But I did like the message behind it of actions having consequences and that we all need to do the right thing (hence the title). I'm glad I've seen it but I don't plan on watching again any time soon.

Film #167: PHILOMENA (2013)

I loved this film! It was breathtaking. I thought the use of flashbacks and the way it was shot in general was completely beautiful. Seriously I don't really have anything else to say about it as it was amazing. Judi Dench was out of this world and so was Steve Coogan as sometimes his acting can be temperamental but I think he was good because he didn't have to try and deliver lines to be funny but they were meant to be serious.

Film #166: BONNIE AND CLYDE (1967)

This was a weird film. I know that the standard of films has increased with time but this film was bizarre. It's the story of Bonnie and Clyde who are bank robbers and the story follows their beginning and finish to their criminal ways but it's strange how they go about robbing banks and how they gain people to help. I didn't really like it for the very wobbly narrative, I think wobbly describes it best. Not wobbly with the camera, wobbly with the script it just didn't flow.

Film #165: MADE IN DAGENHAM (2010)

This is a brilliant heart-warming drama film based on the true story of female workers at the Ford factory protesting against sexual discrimination. I loved this film and there was some truly brilliant performances from the wonderful Sally Hawkins. It really is great. If you like films such as Calender Girls and The Help (I know they're completely different but they both have the same emotional impact to the audience) then this film is for you.

Film #164: CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE WINTER SOLIDER (2014)

I love my university as I have joined their cinema society and the first film they showed was this one which I hadn't seen. I love superhero films and this was not a disappointment. I thought it was so much better than some of the other films Marvel release. In my opinion (and this may be an unpopular one) the Captain America films are extremely good, they are well written, filmed and executed; but Iron Man and Thor films are stupid and childish and they have more help from others than any other superheros I can think of which depreciates their status as a superhero.

Film #163: THELMA AND LOUISE (1991)

As far as bad-asses go Thelma and Louise definitely are the winners. I loved this film it was completely exciting and thrilling to watch. And as much as you wanted to hate Thelma and Louise for the things they were doing you couldn't help but fall in love with them for what life had handed them. And life had handed both of them a fair share in shitty men! This definitely is a classic, I loved it!

Film 162: STEP BROTHERS (2008)

This was an ok film which featured very American lad comedy with Will Ferrell and John C. Reilly. I did enjoy it though and thought that the narrative was very well constructed but it isn't an absolutely amazing with Oscar winning performances. It's good but not great!

Film #161: THE WAY, WAY BACK (2013)

I loved this film. It was such an amazing feel good film. It was very well written as well with a beautiful story of a teenage guy trying to deal with everything when he goes on holiday with his mum and his mum's boyfriend and daughter but finding a haven at the water theme park. I did think the ending should have ended differently. *Spoiler alert* It should have had the mum and Duncan running out of the car at the end and going back to the live with Alison Janney, that would have been a happier ending then what was given. But overall I did love this film, it was kind of a teenage equivalent of The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel.

Film #160: THE SHINING (1980)

What a film?! I absolutely loved this film and thought it so lived up to its reputation. It's a brilliant story anyway, based on the Stephen King novel. And Jack Nicholson was stunning in this performance and I was completely mesmerised by his acting. It is a perfect film and is definitely one that everyone should watch at some point in their life!

Film #159: BLADES OF GLORY (2007)

I really loved this film, it's totally ridiculous but it's super funny. I loved the innuendo humour that is present throughout. Also it is brilliant as it looks at a same sex couple entering a skating competition and how the dynamic might work. I thought that Amy Poehler was super funny and is a fantastic comedian actress. This is a fantastic film to watch with friends.

Film #158: BEDTIME STORIES (2008)

This is a cute film about the stories that a father (Adam Sandler) tells his children then come to life with them placed in the middle of the drama. I liked the narrative of the film and there was some very funny moments. Obviously this is a children's film but it is very well written and constructed.

Film #157: STEPMOM (1998)

This was a really good film that I had never heard of until I saw it. It has the brilliance of Julia Roberts and Susan Sarandon in it. It's based on a terminally ill woman (Sarandon) trying to get on with her ex-husbands new partner (Robers) who will become her children's new stepmother. I really liked this plot as it showed a real life situation as more families are experiencing divorce. It was a good watch definitely.

Film #156: STRUCK BY LIGHTNING (2012)

This was a very good small production film written by a very talented writer named Chris Colfer, who also stars in this film. I really liked the narrative and the idea behind the story. I also thought that it was very well made for a small production film but for me the acting was the part that really let it down. Chris Colfer was really good but he needs to stop doing roles of him being a teenager as he so doesn't look eighteen anymore. But it is a nice film overall.

Film #155: IT'S COMPLICATED (2009)

I liked that the normalised people older than twenty getting into relationships. I thought that Meryl Streep was brilliant as always and that Alec Baldwin gave a surprisingly good performance, as did Steve Martin
. But the film lacked any real perfection to making it revolutionary or award winning. It was a nice watch though.

Film #154: SHALL WE DANCE? (2004)

This has to be one of the few good films that Jennifer Lopez has done as an actress, that and Monster-in-Law. I really loved this film. It's such a feel good film with a star studded cast of Richard Gere, Susan Sarandon and Stanley Tucci. Its about Richard Gere's character John Clark learning to dance with the assistance of Jennifer Lopez's character Paulina. It's a wonderful about how it's never too late to change your life around and make new friends and learn new skills. I did love this film so very much.

Film #153: THE OTHER GUYS (2010)

This was a bad but good film. The humour in it was really good and it was quite a good story about underdog police detectives trying to get a break through in their career. However I think there was too much time spent on them in the office at their computers and of them getting to know each other as appose to them actually fighting the bad guys and solving the case at hand. But it was a good film to watch with friends, it doesn't require a lot of concentration and has lots of genre conventions rolled into it so everyone will enjoy it.

Film #152: TRAINSPOTTING (1996)

I loved this film. It was beautifully shot with the moments of them taking drugs. It definitely was weird but the acting of Ewan McGregor was brilliant and I loved the idea of being stuck in an endless circle of addiction that is broken through completely being engrossed in the addiction itself.

Film #151: MISS PETTIGREW LIVES FOR A DAY (2008)

I loved this film. It was lovely and simple about a woman being given the chance to live how the other half live. She went from living on the street to being employed in numerous occupations and attending highly formal and large events of the social calender. It shows the transformation of her as a woman and the opportunities that she then gets from meeting the right people.

Film #150: AUGUST RUSH (2007)

This is unbelievable but beautiful, it's the story of how a passion for something is what can drive a person to true happiness. And that it doesn't matter where a person is from or the background they have anyone can achieve their dreams. I really liked this story and I think that Freddie Highmore was absolutely perfect for this role and his acting skills have really improved since Finding Neverland and Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.

Film #149: GRAVITY (2013)

I know there was a lot of excitement around this film but I didn't enjoy it that much. It was just one narrative repeated over and over and over again of matter flying through space and destroying the station that Sandra Bullock and George Clooney needed in order to survive. The visual affects were great but it had series conventional gender roles of Sandra Bullock being a damsel in distress who needed a strong man to save her. Seriously her character was so whinny and panicky and then they had George Clooney acting as if that sort of thing happens every day.

Film #148: DECODING ANNIE PARKER (2013)

I really loved this film. It was so powering and really moving. It's about a woman called Annie Parker (Samantha Morton) who gets breast cancer and becomes obsessed with trying to find out what caused her cancer and why she contracted it. Also at the same time there is the story of scientist Mary-Claire King (Helen Hunt) discovering how cancer is hereditary. And wonderfully this is based on a true story, so please check this film out.

Film #147: LETTERS TO JULIET (2010)

This was a stupid film and was just another meaningless romcom that was not needed in today's film industry. I seriously despise films like this. If a romcom is done well then it is beautiful and amazing and heart warming but also wonderfully funny and entertaining but this was just cheap and pathetic.

Film #146: NOTTING HILL (1999)

This was a classic Richard Curtis film with a very conventional romcom narrative, I did really liked it. The humour in it was genius and was beautifully shot and very well acted by Hugh Grant and Julia Roberts. Like I said these reviews are going to be a lot shorter as I am so short of time now and (like I said) have started university so don't have a lot of free time at the moment.

Film #145: WILD TARGET (2010)

I really loved this film. It was very well cast and was super imaginative. I loved Bill Nighy in it as well as Emily Blunt and Rupert Grint. It was a brilliantly constructed action comedy film. This is a really hard genre to get right but they did it extremely well.

Wednesday 24 September 2014

Film #144: CHALET GIRL (2011)

This is a typical Romeo and Juliet narrative of a girl and a guy from two different and conflicting backgrounds falling in love. I didn't mind this film there were some really funny moments in it. Also it had Bill Nighy in which made it so much better!

Friday 19 September 2014

Film #143: GIRL MOST LIKELY (2012)

Two reasons for this film being fantastic. Number one: Darren Criss. Number two: Plot Twist. It was a shit and predictable plot where Kriten Wigg plays another middle aged woman who's lost control of her life and her desires but instead of solving them she basically gains a toyboy with Darren Criss. I mean, no one would turn down Darren Criss as a toyboy but it was slightly unrealistic. Well, it was very unrealistic. It was a bit rubbish but it had its moments of being funny.

Film #142: JOHNNY ENGLISH (2003)

This is one of those strange occurrences where I have seen the sequel but not the first film so I watched it and loved it. Rowan Atkinson is a wonderful actor. I loved this film for its ridiculousness. It's quite physical and slapstick comedy with cheesy puns but it is very well constructed and conventional which makes it brilliant.

Film #141: DECK THE HALLS (2006)

I really like this film. Again it's Christmas based but I loved it. This film follows a neighborhood as a new family moves in which consists of Danny DeVito, Kristin Chenoweth and their children. Once they arrive DeVito and his neighbour Matthew Broderick automatically turn against each other and constantly compete against one another. This feud continues as DeVito then plans to make the Christmas lights on his house bright enough to be seen from space. It's a stupid heart warming film with lots of cheese.

Film #140: DARK SHADOWS (2012)

This was a charming Tim Burton film about a vampire waking up in the 20th century after being buried alive in the 18th century. It then follows how he copes with the new everyday lives of people as he stays with a family who are his descendants. I liked it but I know that it received lots of criticisms from other reviews. It is unlike any other Tim Burton film. I know this gets said a lot as none of Burton's films are similar but this is a chip of the block for the Burton film collection.

Film #139: GOOD MORNING VIETNAM (1987)

This was an absolutely stunning film. I honestly cannot believe I have never seen this film before. Robin Williams (RIP) was phenomenal and completely moved the films direction. He was able to make it a comedy then a drama then a heart warming film that made you fuzzy inside. The film follows Williams' character going to Vietnam to host a radio show for all the people serving in the army. He is used to uplift their spirits with his comedy and talented voice. But the longer he stays the more involved he becomes in everything surrounding him.
This has to be my favourite Robin Williams film now, except Aladdin of course. Everyone should watch this film at least ten times in their lifetime. Gooooood Morning Vietnam!!!!

Film #138: FIRST NIGHT (2010)

This film is horrible. It's an opera based comedy, which are two things which should never ever go together in a film. It just doesn't work and the film flops. I literally have nothing more to say other than don't watch it.

Film #137: FOUR CHRISTMASES (2008)

I know it's early to be watching Christmas films but I am a child and I love Christmas so deal with this. This film was stupid but there were some really good and funny moments which did make it a good watch. The principle of the film was a little naff but overall it was quite heart warming. However it does not compete with the likes of Love Actually and The Santa Claus films as far as Christmas films go. This film follows a couple who always go away for Christmas but when they're televised for being stranded in an airport and having to cancel their flights their families see and invite them over for Christmas, which is the reason they always go away for the holiday.
So basically I just started university (it's very exciting) so I don't have a lot of time on my hands and I have loads of reviews to write up so they're going to be shorter now so I can finish on time. I am still determined to do this!!

Thursday 18 September 2014

Film #136: INKHEART (2008)

I didn't really like this film it was a bit dry. I liked the idea but it got boring at points or became too ridiculous. I think that this is one of those films that should have stayed as a book. It's a fantasy film about a girl who discovers her fathers talent to bring characters out from their books and they have to stop a freed villain from being evil and destroying everything. It just felt like the Golden Compass film and shouldn't have been made. Or should have been made a few year in the future when the quality of which it is written could have been improved.

Film 135: THE DARK KNIGHT RISES (2012)

This was again a really good film. It was very well constructed and well written. I also loved Anne Hathaway as Catwoman. My only problem was that at times throughout the film you couldn't really hear what Bane was saying through his mask which made him less scary or fearing as I just couldn't understand his evil remarks. But it was a good plot and as well was really good for showing the moral side of every superhuman between good and evil. It is a good action filled film with a brilliant plot twist!

Film #134: THE DARK KNIGHT (2008)

I really liked this film, I think the Batman franchise is overused and that DC need to invest in making other films for their characters. The world needs a Wonder Woman film! But this was really good. There was a good plot filled with a good and clear plot. It stars Heath Ledger, Christian Bale, Gary Oldman, Morgan Freeman and Michael Caine. It is really star studded but all these actors are brilliant and deliver their parts extremely well. I especially loved Michael Caine as Alfred, I thought he nailed the part. So yeah, it is a really good watch.

Film #133: GHOSTBUSTERS 2 (1989)

If you liked the Ghostbusters then this will rock your world. I loved it even though I normally believe that sequels to films are often terrible but this was still as witty and terribly funny as the first one. As well it was just as much of a classic as the first with some brilliant acting from Bill Murray, Harold Ramis, Dan Aykroyd, Sigourney Weaver and Ernie Hudson. It was a very clever plot but it did also have the extreme factor about it but I that’s what made the first one so brilliant.

Film #132: THE LADYKILLERS (2004)

I really liked this film. The plot was stupid but was so funny. It stars my love, Tom Hanks, as well as Ryan Hurst, J.K. Simmons and many others. The plot follows a group of people including Tom Hanks who trick an old woman into staying in her basement in order to tunnel through to the casino safe that she lives next to. It was charmingly different with a phenomenal performance by Tom Hanks who completely became his character. Also this film offers the moral side of criminal offences through the highly religious lady who’s house they stay in. This is a very strange film which I don’t think would be liked by all people but I definitely enjoyed it and hope that more people will do as well.

Film #131: THE HOLIDAY (2006)

This is a chick flick that lots of people like, except me. I really didn’t like it and don’t understand why people think that this film is so wonderful. It’s so cheesy and really not realistic in any way. It’s about two women, Cameron Diaz and Kate Winslet, who house swap for their holidays and find love with Jack Black and Jude Law. Like I said cheesy and predictable. For me I don’t understand why Jude Law would do this film as he is an outstanding actor who doesn’t need films like this one which has about 1% of decent acting beside Law in it. Harsh I know but it really was appalling.

Film #130: THE BUTLER (2013)

I honestly loved this film. It was so beautiful and well made. I thought that it was very well constructed as it wasn’t so long that it got boring but was still long enough to get a life time of a person condensed down with the most important parts in it. This was very important as it showed everyday moments of the family which made you become more aware of their dynamics and able to gain an opinion on each character. Furthermore this meant that when it came to the more emotional moments of the film you became attached to the characters and felt your heart break for them. It’s the story of a man who serves in the White House as a butler over eight presidents worth. I thought that this film so deserved all the awards it was nominated for and won. It starred Forest Whitaker and Opera Winfrey as well as many other big names such as Robin Williams (RIP), Jane Fonda, Alan Rickman, as well as many others. It truly is worth watching if you’re into more serious films.

Film #129: THE WEDDING PLANNER (2001)

Ok so this film was horrible and predictable and Jennifer Lope should not have ever been involved in such a terrible film. I fear that more people may watch this film. It’s based around Jennifer Lopez being a wedding planner who gets a job organising a wedding for a couple. She then falls in love with the groom in the wedding but knows she can never act on her feelings as he’s obviously engaged. And I think you can guess the rest of the plot. This film also stars Matthew McConaughey with a bad haircut. The best way to describe this film is it is very 1990’s style even though it was made on the 90’s/00’s border.

Film #128: THE LOVE PUNCH (2013)

This is a very strange film; it is so not what I thought it would be like. I expected a traditional rom-com film showing the relationship between Emma Thompson and Pierce Brosnan with the comedy brought from their quirky friends Celia Imrie and Timothy Spall. It was this but also so much more. There was a special narrative brought through the action side of this film. It contained a beautiful plot of the four friends trying to steal some diamonds from a man who took over Brosnan’s work company and who got rid of their pensions. Basically. It is as brilliantly charming as it is heart warmingly funny. I do salute these actors for taking on this film as it was a pleasant surprise of a film.

Film #127: SHE'S ALL THAT (1999)

This was such a bad film that it then became good. In a strange way I liked this film because of it's cheesy American plot that was cringe-worthy of its badness. It stars Freddie Prinze, Jr and Rachael Leigh Cook and is the story of how the most popular guy in school bets his friends that he can make this outcast girl who's into art become prom queen. But he never anticipates falling in love with her. Blah blah blah. It was terrible but brilliant at the same time.

Film #126: CLOUDY WITH A CHANCE OF MEATBALLS 2 (2013)

Ok, I decided to watch the second film pretty much after just finishing the first and I wasn't disappointed. I really loved the second one for the main reason that it started off pretty much at the exact point where the first one ended; which is something you don't often see in films. I also loved the same humour was present and that the film hadn't lost anything from the first that made it so wonderful. I now loved in this film that the food is beginning to really get personality which was fun to watch for myself and my family who were watching it with me at the time. This is another good watch.

Film #125: CLOUDY WITH A CHANCE OF MEATBALLS (2009)

This was such a lovely and simple idea of being able to turn the weather to food and I loved it. Food is great. Food is wonderful and this film was just that also. I loved the humour which was for the adults as well as the children. And I loved the characters as all of them had something to give to the film. It was completely different from all other animated children's film these days and I think this film should have more celebration to it.

Film #124: EVER AFTER (1998)

This was a very traditional take on the Cinderella tale but what was nice was that the Cinderella character Danielle (Drew Barrymore) was a smart and confident person as appose to the norm of these types of films where they are hopeless damsels in depresses. It also had strong moments of humour and very good pace to the film which was lovely to see. But at the same time this film was also still the same old tale with nothing new or exciting to it.

Film #123: TURBO (2013)

This was another children's film which was really quite good but bad. It was a stupid plot line, people don't actually race snails. But I loved the moments of humour and I loved the other snails as well, they all had something that you can take away or a personality that you can fall in love with. Although at the same time, as I write this I am realising that this is actually just the plot of Disney Pixar's Cars but with snails instead of cars. So if you liked that then this film will definitely be for you.

Film #122: BLUE HAWAII (1961)

This is one of the many films that Elvis Presley did and I surprisingly enjoyed it. It had a strange feel to it as he was such an extraordinary person but this film was really lovely and funny to watch. I loved the bar scene with the really dramatic and old style bar fight. It was amusing to me now as at the time most of the fight scenes would have looked something like that and it be the norm of filming.

Film #121: BELIEVE (2013)

This was such a shit film. It was basically a remake of Billy Elliot except they didn't break the social/conventional norm of having Billy want to do something against his gender stereotype (ballet) they had their version of Billy want to do football. It was stupid and shouldn't have been made. To those families who have made their children watch it they should have just given them a copy of Billy Elliot as it was better as a whole in how it was filmed, written, acted, everything. I know this was based on a true story but I don't think this is a story that needed to be told, harsh I know but it was predictable. I really didn't see the point in making Believe. Please just watch Billy Elliot. Or if you want a film about football watch Bend it like Beckham.

Film #120: ABOUT A BOY (2002)

This was a beautiful film about a boy (haha funny that's the title) and how people can save each other when they're lonely and need help. It's about how a small boy called Marcus (Nicolas Halt) becomes friends with a man named Will (Hugh Grant). Will is a man with lots of money after his father had a number one selling Christmas song and so does nothing but live off from that money, he has no family and sleeps around with different women using different pick up lines and stories in order to get them into bed. When Marcus comes along he is just another person he can use as a pick up story saying that Marcus is his son. But Marcus sees Will as a friend and an escape as his mother Fiona (Toni Collette) suffers from depression and is full of hippy believes and values for her family's way of life. It's a beautiful story of how they all work together to try and make their lives better and what one boy won't do for the love of his mother and his friend. I truly loved this film!

Film #119: ONE CHANCE (2013)

This is the film based on the life of Britain's Got Talent winner Paul Potts staring James Corden as Potts. I did enjoy this film it was unbelievable the amount of life defining moments that Potts had and how well he managed to overcome them. Such as being heavily bullied when growing up, trying to get into Opera school in Rome, finding true love, loosing his voice at one point for a long period of time. It was a heart warming film to watch. The lip miming was poor but that wasn't necessary the actors fault as opera is a very difficult genre to sing and so miming is even more so. I do take my hat off to this film I enjoyed it very much.

Film #118: AUSTENLAND (2013)

This was a small romantic/feel good film. It was quite a nice film that was based around a house that people can visit to act like their living in the Austen books. It was another romantic mushy film but contained a few moments of genius, such as casting Jennifer Coolidge (better known as Stifler's mum in the American Pie films). Her character was so beautifully funny and wonderful. But other than that it was an ok film.

Film #117: JURASSIC PARK (1993)

This was a Steven Spielberg classic film that just regained my faith in what films can be like. The idea. The plot. The acting. Everything was brilliant. For the few people that don't know what the film is about, it is based on the idea of humans being able to grow dinosaurs from DNA found. They then make this park to keep the animals in and are planning to make it like a zoo for visitors to view the dinosaurs in and make lots of money. So as the park is close to opening up they invite a handful of guests to check it out first, there's scientists, the finance people, as well as a few others go around the park but disaster strikes when the animals escape their cages and they all have to fight for survival. I in particular loved Jeff Goldblum as Ian Malcolm he was a wonderful character. He was the blunt honest kind which gave humour to the situation and lightened the mood of the film at parts.

Film #116: DEAR JOHN (2010)

I feel like I've watched loads of romantic films which really isn't like me, I don't overly like them which is probably noticeable from my reviews on here. I really didn't like this film. It was just so blah. There was nothing that really stood out for me like in The Notebook the kiss makes even the coldest of heart melt. But this film was just boring romantic mush. It's based around Amanda Seyfried and Channing Tatum's characters writing to each other after they fall in love one summer. It shows their different lives as Tatum's character is in the army and with Seyfried's character at college. But I just found it totally unrealistic of the events that occur in the film like falling in love so instantly and then basically changing their entire lives to be together when only knowing each other for such a short period of time.

Film #115: STARSKY AND HUTCH (2004)

I loved this film. It was so well filmed and was as funny and thrilling as the original from the 1970's. I surprisingly loved Snoop Dog's character Huggy Bear and thought that Ben Stiller and Owen Wilson nailed these roles. I thought the plot was clever and very witty and I was just impressed overall as to the result of the film. But I think this is really particular to the audience, I like real witty, immature and (well done) slapstick comedy which was delivered in this film, however I know that that is a very specific comedy type to have so if you do not find comedies like that funny then definitely do not watch this film.

Film #114: WATER FOR ELEPHANTS (2011)

This was a good film but also slightly unbelievable. It's a (another) story about love. a forbidden love that overcomes all obstacles. All of you film fanatics out there reading this will realise that I just quoted Moulin Rouge (a brilliant film) and all of you who didn't then shame on you. I liked this film, it was based around Robert Pattinson's character Jacob and Reese Witherspoon's character Marlena falling in love. Both characters work for a travelling circus, Jacob as the circus vet and Marlena as a performer with elephants and other animals. It was beautifully shot and the costumes were spectacular. It was a good watch but very conventional of a romance film.

Film #113: ANY HUMAN HEART (2010)

Ok, this was a TV show but I'm counting this as a film as the episodes were an hour long each in this series so it every single episode felt like a film in itself. I kind of liked this but it was way too long. Its based on the life of a man called Logan Mountstuart and his life. Therefore there is numerous characters that play Logan, Jim Broadbent, Matthew Macfadyen and Sam Claflin. It shows his life growing up and going through numerous different life changing events that define his life. I did like the idea and the acting was beautiful so I did appreciate it in that sense but as terrible as it sounds my
problem with it was the length of the series itself.
